History
Casale del Giglio was founded in 1967 by Berardino Santarelli at Le Ferriere in the Agro Pontino, and in 1985 he and his son Antonio launched a research project with leading Italian viticulturists to identify which varieties suited this then-uncharted terroir. Syrah, Petit Verdot and whites such as Viognier and Petit Manseng proved best; the estate's flagship Mater Matuta, a Syrah-led red, takes its name from an ancient sacred way and temple discovered beneath the vineyards.
