History
Ornellaia was created in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori as his own answer to the Bordeaux-style 'Super Tuscans' of Bolgheri, its first vintage released in 1985. After a period of Mondavi involvement the estate passed fully to the Frescobaldi family in 2005. Its flagship Ornellaia is a Cabernet-led Bolgheri Superiore; the single-vineyard Merlot Masseto, born under the Ornellaia label in 1986 and bottled separately from 1987, went on to become Italy's most famous Merlot as its own estate.
