History

The Altare family bought a small farm at La Morra in 1948; Elio Altare took over in 1976 and, after a formative trip to Burgundy, became the standard-bearer of Barolo's 'modernist' movement, favouring shorter macerations and French barriques. His break with tradition was sealed by the famous 1983 night he took a chainsaw to the family's old botti. His Barolo Arborina is a modernist landmark.
